Why are Films Important?
Films are one of the most widely circulated art mediums ever. This means the people who make the movies have a lot of power to shape how their audience views a story. The impact that films have had on western culture is vast, whether it's Gone with the Wind or Despicable Me, films have a lasting effect on our culture. Both of these movies have made their mark, but why? This is one of the questions we will discuss in our meetings.
Why Discuss Films?
All art is meant to be discussed, every person will react to a piece differently and by sharing our reactions, it strengthens our empathy for one another. Forming one’s own opinion is important but sharing opinions with an open mind is just as important. Films are a great introduction to this because of forced perspective and how they are mass produced, unlike theater. Film is truly for the people, but not always by the people. Media literacy is a tool that needs to be practiced in our day and age and these meetings will allow that tool to be sharpened.
Meeting Objectives
During these meetings, participants will discuss the importance of that film and/or genre, the reactions the participants had while watching, and whether the storytelling techniques worked. Rabbit holes will be explored and welcomed within reason.
